How to Choose Words That Strengthen Your Brand Voice

A brand voice gets clearer when you decide not only what you say, but what you consistently sound like.

THE IDEAREAD FIRST

Start with the part that actually matters.

Brand voice is easier to maintain when writers have concrete examples and decisions to follow. A vague instruction like “make it friendly” is rarely enough.

01Brand Voice

Choose a few useful traits

Pick three to five traits that describe the desired voice. “Direct,” “warm,” “observant,” and “confident” give a writer more to work with than “professional.”

02Brand Voice

Make the traits visible

For each trait, write a short example of what it sounds like and what it does not sound like. Examples turn an abstract brand preference into a practical editorial tool.

03Brand Voice

Create a repeatable reference

Keep strong examples from your site, emails, founder posts, and scripts in one place. New copy can then be compared against real language instead of memory.

That reference also helps a freelancer move between projects without losing consistency.
